First, it is a clear warning to those executing the regime of Bashar al-Assad: You will never be safe again, anywhere on the planet. Syrian torturers can no longer go without treatment in Geneva or go shopping in Paris without being punished by the court.
After a trial of one and a half years and more than 100 days, German judges of the Koblens court sentenced Anwar Ruslan to life imprisonment. The former Colonel of the Syrian Secret Service, who is in charge of the investigation at al-Qaeda prison in Damascus, has been found guilty of “crimes against humanity” in 27 murders, assault and battery, rape, kidnapping, hostage-taking and sexual abuse. Between 2011 and 2012 at least 4,000 people were tortured under his authority and 30 prisoners lost their lives.
