Confusion surrounds artificial intelligence

Regulate? No regulation at all? Little? But what is artificial intelligence (AI)? By what definition, for what use? Here’s a small selection from the countless questions that arise with more and more emphasis on this technology. Even as the UN issued a warning on Tuesday against the dangers of AI, digital giants are increasing their progress in this area. Questions arise around the true motives of Google and Microsoft, which, alongside their internal research, are funding two leading start-ups.

On Tuesday, for the first time, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning about the dangers posed by AI. The official, of course, pointed to more serious threats: He called for “never removing” human control of nuclear weapons and pointed to the risks of “failure” of AI systems in biotechnology, neurotechnology and robotics. Antonio Guterres warned of the “malicious use of AI systems for terrorist, criminal or state purposes” which could create “unimaginable levels of psychological damage”.
