The big surprise came Saturday night for a man quietly enjoying his hot tub outside a rental home near Nathrop, Colorado. Around 8pm he suddenly felt something grabbing his head. He and his wife started screaming and spraying what they thought was an animal. Holding the flashlight, the woman saw that it was a mountain lion.

The cries and the light pushed the beast back a few meters. Screaming continuously, the pair managed to fend off the animal as it made its way to the top of the cliff, but the man and woman were watching. The latter then exited their Jacuzzi and took refuge at home. They alerted the owner, who immediately called members of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Superficial scratches

Two wildlife guards reached the spot and searched for the puma to no avail. The victim in the pool had four superficial scratches on his skull and near his right ear, he explains CBS. He cleaned his wounds and did not want further care.

According to CPW, “The mountain lion may have seen the man’s head moving in the dark at ground level, but it did not see the occupants of a hot tub. The couple did well to make noise and enlighten the animal. Although the victim only sustained minor injuries, we are taking this incident seriously. We alerted the neighbors and put up warning signs about the movement of mountain lions. A trap was placed nearby in hopes of catching a cougar.

CPW says this is the first attack by a mountain lion on a human in Colorado since February 27, 2022. Since 1990, there have been three deaths and 24 injuries due to mountain lion attacks in the state.
