Belgian police have arrested Eva Kayley, Vice President of the European Parliament, in a corruption investigation

On Friday (December 9), the Belgian police arrested the Greek socialist leader and one of the vice-presidents of the European Parliament, Eva Kayli, in Brussels, sources told AFP, citing sources. The arrest took place in connection with a corruption investigation involving Qatar, which hosts the FIFA World Cup. Kylie’s arrest followed the arrest of four others.

And Agence France-Presse reported, quoting sources, that Kylie, who is an accomplice of one of the four people arrested earlier, was detained for questioning by the police.

Earlier arrests were announced by the Belgian federal prosecutor after the discovery of €600,000 in cash when police raided 16 addresses in the capital, Brussels.

The prosecution did not specify the identities of the suspects or the name of the country concerned, saying only that it was a “Gulf” country.

“Four people have been arrested for questioning and may appear before the investigative judge,” prosecutors said.

Among those questioned was a former member of the European Parliament.

The Belgian media, Le Soir amd Knack, said that the arrested former MEP is Italian socialist and former MEP Pier Antonio Panzieri.

And Agence France-Presse said that sources close to the case confirmed press reports that it focused on suspicious Qatari attempts to bribe an Italian socialist who was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019.
