Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro occupy important seats of power in Brasilia

Hundreds of supporters of Brazilian far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro occupied key seats of power in Brasilia, Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace of Planado on Sunday.

The demonstrators are protesting the return to power of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in a runoff on October 30, a week ago.

Video published by Brazilian media Oh Globo Shows several people breaking through windows and entering Congress:

Many photos and videos are going viral on social media. The images show ongoing clashes with police and extensive damage inside occupied buildings.

Newspaper the world Noting that the area around Congress was cordoned off by officials, “but Bolsonaros […] Police managed to break through the security cordons despite resorting to tear gas in an attempt to push them out of the site’s confines.

Following the riot, a police car was parked inside the fountain located in front of the Congress. On social media, protesters celebrated the sight and chanted, “Everything is ours!”

A group of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro have broken through a blockade set up by police and are now occupying the roof of the building.

Asked by Press Oh GloboFormer Vice President of the Republic Hamilton Mauro described the ongoing invasion of several public buildings in Brasilia as “anarchy”.

These events come two years after the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol in the United States.
