Service Station Blast: Seven Killed, Many Injured

Seven people have been killed in an explosion at a petrol station in northwest Ireland, police said on Saturday. Eight people have been hospitalized, and the search for victims continues.

The explosion occurred in the village of Creaslok on Friday afternoon. Pictures show the damage caused by the explosion at the service station, but also on the facades of neighboring apartments.

Irish police, fire, ambulance and coastguard services, the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance Service and a team of experts from the British province were on site on Saturday.

Letterkenny University Hospital, about 15 miles from the service station, was put in emergency care and treated for ‘multiple injuries’, according to a statement.

Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin said in a statement that his ‘thoughts and prayers are with those killed and injured in this devastating explosion (today)’. ‘

“The islanders are as shocked and completely devastated as the people of Creaslow are at this tragic loss of life,” he said, thanking emergency service personnel who worked “throughout the night in a very traumatic situation”.
