Police say Tykov, a member of the rap group Migos, was fatally shot outside a private party in Houston.

Authorities said Tykov, who represented a third of Migos’ platinum-selling group, was shot and killed early Tuesday in Houston, Texas. He was 28 years old.

Troy Viner, the Houston police chief, said at a press conference Tuesday that police received a call with a shooting in progress at about 2:34 a.m. local time. Officers arrived at 810 Billiards & Bowling Houston where there was a private party and found a dead man at the scene.

The sergeant said two other people – a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman – were also injured in the shooting and took themselves to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Michael Arrington with the police department’s homicide division.

Police staff said that an altercation occurred after the party ended when a large group of people gathered in the front door area outside the building, which led to the shooting. Wiener said at least 40 people were at the scene at the time of the shooting.

“Many people fled the scene and did not comply with their statements,” Arrington said.

Wiener identified the deceased man as Kirschnik Khari Paul, aka Take Off from the rap group Migos.

“I’ve had so many calls from Houston and outside of Houston, and everyone talked about him being an amazing guy, how safe he was, and what a great artist he is,” Viner said, adding later that Takeoff was highly respected and non-violent.

“I don’t expect him to be involved…we have no reason to believe he was involved in anything criminal at the time,” Wiener said.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said they met Tikoff’s mother.

“It doesn’t matter how famous you are. You may not be famous at all,” Turner said. “Anyone who loses their life is a life wasted, and there are family and friends who are sad as a result.”

The news of Tykov’s death was a blow to the hip-hop community, which is still recovering from it The fatal shooting of the rapper PnB Rock in September. The stars moved to social media Tuesday to pay tribute and express their condolences on Takeoff’s death.

The song quickly became an internet sensation, spawning numerous memes that played the lyrics “rain drop, drop higher.”

The song got an even bigger boost after “Atlanta” creator and star Donald Glover dropped the song during an acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.

“I really want to thank Migos, not for being on the show, but for making Bad and Boujee,” Glover said at the time. “Such the best song ever.”
