Many Palestinians were evacuated from the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip. After Israel announced the continuation of its attack on Rafah and the seizure of the border crossing adjacent to the Egyptian border, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that attacking Rafah may be a strategic mistake and risk a major humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the temporary ceasefire proposal agreed to by Hamas representatives from Egypt and Qatar is “still far” from what the Israeli government wants. He stressed that Israel will not allow Hamas to restore its evil regime in Gaza. This may hamper future ceasefire negotiations.
Bill Burns, Director of the CIA, prepares to make an official visit to Israel today (May 8) to meet with Netanyahu. They discussed the possibility of ending military operations in Rafah. This is the area that Israel believes is the last stronghold of Hamas in the Gaza Strip at the present time.
