Barnes said: “I’m delighted. It’s an amazing club for me, it’s a massive opportunity to come and be part of a successful team that’s doing exciting things, so I’m really excited to be here.

“I think it’s a striker’s dream to join a team like this; it’s very paced, it’s physically demanding, but you can see the rewards of that in the chances and goals scored, so I think I’ll definitely fit the style.”

Howe said: “Harvey is an exciting talent who I have admired for a long time so I am delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United.

“He’s strong, quick and technically very good, and last season he showed in particular that he has an eye for goal from wide positions. He will add a different element to our play and we look forward to working with him as we prepare for next season.”

Barnes is a product of Leicester’s academy and has made 187 appearances in all competitions after making his debut in 2016, scoring 45 goals.

He was Leicester’s top scorer last season, scoring 13 goals in 34 Premier League games.

Brand move Harvey Barnes

Last season, Michael Cox analyzed Barnes’ style of play, what he brought to Leicester and what it lacked, with a focus on his successful use of a two-player…

Barnes shows flashes of genius. You won’t find a step-by-step, a subtle finish, or many amazing long-range keepers. Barnes’ game is based almost on the simplest concept in football: give and go.

“He’s a good ball-carrier, but undoubtedly knows his limits in beating his opponents outright. As a wide-scoring player, his main job is to get past the opposition full-back and score goals. Therefore, he makes up for his lack of trickery by playing relentlessly with his teammates.

“Opposition right-backs have a specific task when they play against Barnes – don’t worry too much about him running at you with the ball, but be very careful when he hits the ball on the ground and attacks you.”
