The call to take her place in baseball history, one that Alyssa Naken has long since prepared, came in the third inning Tuesday night, when the San Francisco Giants first base coach was fired for responding to what he said was a racist comment.

Naken, an assistant who works with the Giants players on baseball and defense, became the first woman in MLS history to coach on the field after Antoine Richardson was sent off. When called, she left her batting cage spot, swapping out her sweatshirt for her number 92 jersey and taking the batting helmet off.

She said, “I think we’re all inspired doing everything we do on a daily basis, and I think, yeah, that carries a little more weight because of the vision, and there’s obviously a historical nature to that” (Via The Associated Press) after the Giants’ 13-2 victory over San Diego Padres. “But again, this is my business.”

Her helmet was on its way to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, but Naken needed a reminder of the importance of her looks that came Days after Rachel Balkovich became the first woman To manage a minor league branch of a major league team.

“It’s a big deal,” Nakin said of her moment. “I feel a great sense of responsibility and feel that my job is to honor those who helped me get to where I am now.”

Eric Hosmer, Padres’ primary businessman, greeted her with a handshake while the crowd at Oracle Park in San Francisco applauded.

“Now at this moment when I’m going back I’m going back to someone who needs to get out, we needed a coach to train first base, our base coach was fired, I’ve been training as first base coach for the past few years and I’ve worked alongside Antoine, So I stepped into what I was set to do, which is support this team and this team.”

While the moment was historic, it wasn’t a huge deal because “it’s not a foreign place on the field for her,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “She does a lot of other things well that are unseen, so it’s good to see her being out there in the spotlight and doing it in the field.”

How the San Francisco Giants, Intentionally Different, Built Surprising Strength

Sacramento State’s star softball player, 31-year-old Nakin She was the first coach to be hired by a major league team When Kapler brought her into service in January 2020. She earned a master’s degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco and trained in the Giants baseball operations division in 2014.

The moment came when Richardson was sent off for responding to what he said was a comment with “racist undertones” by Badris’ third head coach, Mike Scheldt. Per Richardson, Shieldt was researching the lair of giants for bowler Alex Wood. Soon, Richardson said that Scheldt told Kapler “You need to control that m ———–. Richardson then climbed up the stairs of the dugout giants and said, “Excuse me” to Scheldt. Richardson said referee Greg Gibson immediately threw him out for “incitement”.

“[Shildt’s] Richardson said (via KNBR). “I think it’s really important to understand what happened tonight. And the second equally disappointing part is that the sentence that this referee gave me enables this coach to continue to have conversations like this with people like me. It’s really unfortunate that’s what happened tonight.

“With this, I am really excited that Alyssa got her chance to make her debut in the Major League and I am very proud of her. I think she did a really great job and we won, so that is the most important thing.”

Scheldt and Padres have yet to comment on the matter, but he and Richardson met on the field Wednesday morning, shaking hands.

“I know that Antoine was not out of control at all and that anything that was said implied was totally inappropriate,” Kapler said on Tuesday night. “He did not incite any part of this.”
