George Takei, JJ Abrams and others pay tribute to the late Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols

Nichols has played Enterprise crew member Nyota Oora in the series and several Trek films.

Abrams, who directed the 2009 reboot “Star Trek” and 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness”, described Nichols as “a wonderful woman in a fantastic role.”

“A wonderful woman playing an amazing role. Nichelle, we will miss you so badly. Sending so much love and respect,” he wrote on Twitter.

Star Trek star William Shatner also praised her for writing, “She was a beautiful woman who played a wonderful character who did so much to redefine social issues here in the United States and around the world.”

Georgian politician and “Trek” cheerleader Stacey Abrams posted a photo of her with Nichols, captioning, “One of my most treasured photos – good luck to Nichelle Nichols, the wonderful heroine, warrior and actress. Her kindness and bravery lighted the way for many. May she dwell forever among the stars.”

Actor Coleman Domingo wrote, “Nichelle Nichols told us we belong in outer space. We are limitless. Today’s heavens have acquired aura.”
