Westerners and Russians are in “completely different” positions
Despite a week of intense diplomacy, the debates have stalled. “It’s worrying,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
“We do not know what the outcome will be. We have negotiated these three sessions and there are some agreements between us. But in general, in the questions of theory, we can now say that we are in different, completely different positions. And it’s not good, it’s annoying, ”he said.
Europeans and Americans accuse the Russians of stationing nearly 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border to invade a neighboring country. Even US intelligence says Moscow has already appointed agents in eastern Ukraine to carry out “sabotage” operations aimed at creating a “pretext” for the attack.
The Kremlin has denied the allegations and said it wants to protect itself from the threat posed by NATO. Russia specifically demands a guarantee that the Atlantic Alliance will not accept Ukraine’s membership, a concession in principle that the West refuses.
‘Nobody Intimidates Anyone’
“No one is threatened by military action,” Dmitry Peskov promised on CNN when asked about a possible Russian attack if diplomacy fails. “But we will retaliate if NATO does not comply with Russia’s demands,” he warned, without elaborating on the nature of the response.
A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin warned: “We are not talking about tomorrow, it is not a matter of hours.” “We want to realize the beginning of the desire to take our concerns into account. At this point, we have unfortunately failed to reach this conclusion.
He also rejected the threat of unprecedented sanctions imposed by the United States in the event of an invasion of Ukraine. “This is a big mistake” because it would “lead to the termination of any relationship between our two countries,” he warned.
