A busload of Venezuelan migrants trying to reach the United States fell into a ravine in Colombia on Saturday, killing nine people and injuring 31 others, officials said.

Army Colonel Luis Jesus León told reporters that “90% of the people on the bus were Venezuelans and were traveling towards the northern coast towards the city of Cartagena”. Police said that six men and three women have died. Two of them are minors. The accident happened at 04:20 local time (09:20 GMT) near the municipality of Playa in the department of Santander (northeast), on the road to Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

A drop in a hundred meter gorge

Civil Defense first noted that the bus, carrying more than 40 passengers, was traveling on a road connecting Bucaramanga, Cucuta, in the northeast of the country. The accident took place when the bus left the road and fell into a hundred meter ditch. In pictures released by the Civil Defense, we can see the vehicle and scattered clothes among the bushes at the scene of the accident.

Road accidents are one of the leading causes of death in Colombia. Last Tuesday, eight people were killed when a bus collided head-on with a semi-trailer in La Guajira (North) department.
