Author of Annecy attack charged with “attempted assassination” – rts.ch

A Syrian refugee who stabbed six people, including four children, in a park in Annecy has been charged with attempted murder and rioting with a weapon. Remanded in pre-trial detention, his gesture could not be understood without trial.

Since his arrest on Thursday morning, Abdelmazi H. The psychiatrist who examined him “noted the absence of obvious delusional elements,” but “it is still too early to make a decision on the possible presence or absence of psychopathology,” announced Annecy Line Bonnet’s lawyer at a press conference on Saturday.

Investigations continue “to understand specifically the motivations and motives of the accused following this heinous act”, underlined Damien Delaby, regional boss of the judicial police for his part, and the case gathered more than a hundred investigators this week.

The victim’s main predictor, in absolute haste after the attack, was no longer involved, Annecy’s lawyer also announced.

“There is no terrorist motivation at this stage.”

Abdelmasih H., charged with “rebellion with a weapon” due to the conditions of his arrest in the park, was placed in pre-trial detention. The magistrate said he could be jailed for life on the “attempted murder” charge.

Even though witnesses were heard “chanting the name of Jesus Christ” during the attack, “no terrorist motivation appears at this point,” the lawyer says. The Christian from Syria, wearing a cross around his neck, was found with two “Christian pictures”, a Swedish driver’s license and 480 euros in cash.
