A man armed with a knife sowed terror in a park on the shores of Lake Annecy in Haute-Savoie on Thursday morning, injuring six people, including four young children, before being arrested by police.

The attacker was born in 1991, is a Syrian national, an asylum seeker and unknown to all files. He has lived in Sweden for ten years and has refugee status, he said.

She is married and has a three-year-old child with a Swedish man, whom she divorced last year. According to his ex-wife, he left Sweden because he could not obtain Swedish citizenship.

“No apparent terrorist intent” has yet been sustained in the investigation, Lyne Bonnet-Mathis announced during a press conference, noting that the investigation remains open to assassination attempts.

A crisis unit has been set up in the Haute-Savoie prefecture, which has also set up an information system for the public.

There was heavy police security around the park. The attack sowed fear in the usually very peaceful water town. According to the Dauphiné Liberated newspaper, most of the victims were transferred to the Annecy Genevois Hospital Center and witnesses were taken to a building near the scene of the tragedy.

One of the children was taken to Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), the hospital center confirmed to Le Temps. No other hospital would have admissions and added HUG without further comment.

After the attack, Interior Minister Gerald Dorman posted a tweet: “Several people, including children, were injured by a man armed with a knife in a square in Annecy. The man was arrested due to very quick intervention. Police”.

In Paris, representatives of the government and members of the National Assembly observed a minute of silence:

Assembly President Yaël Braun-Pivet called for a moment of silence “for them, for their families” after the “severe attack”.

Prime Ministers Elizabeth Bourne and Gerald Dorman are expected at the site on Thursday and their entourages have also announced.

For his part, Emmanuel Macron condemned “an attack of absolute cowardice”. “The nation is in shock. Our thoughts are with them, their families and the mobilized rescuers,” the French president said on Twitter.
