A man suspected of sexual assault, held in pre-trial detention “under X” in Vienna (Isère), the courts failed to identify him due to his complete silence, we learned with the prosecution on Tuesday.

“This gentleman understands but does not want to talk”, “This is the first time this has happened to me in 20 years,” Vienna public prosecutor Audrey Gui told AFP, confirming the information in the regional daily “The Dauphiné Libéré”.

“Must be in his thirties”, according to the magistrate, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault (touching) at Vienna station on August and September 11. With no possessions, he had arrived in the region “before summer.”

He is not dumb and speaks French

During two police remands, he remained completely silent before the judge who appeared immediately on Monday. “It’s a right, the right to remain silent (…) but so far he doesn’t want to give any information,” added Ms Quay.

However, the man was not silent. Three witnesses, including a user of the Vienna station, told investigators they heard the suspect speak in French.

Because the man was “unknown” to the police, homeless reception centers, hospitals and mental health services, he was referred and detained under X pending his trial, which was set for October 16. Until then, the state attorney’s office has ordered a mental health evaluation.
