This is unheard of in the history of Northern Ireland. For the first time since the formation of the British province in 1921, a party favorable to Irish integration is set to become the country’s first political force. Sinn Fin received 27% of the vote ahead of Thursday’s Northern Ireland Assembly election. Despite not gaining a majority, it is far ahead of all its competitors.
Katie Howard, a professor of political sociology at Belfast, Queen’s University, said: “Rising prices, employment, housing and the crisis in the health system are the most consensual topics.”
