In Iran, 5 people who raped a woman were hanged
Tehran on Wednesday executed five men accused of raping a woman in May 2022 in the northwest of the country. The culprits were known to the police before the incident.
“Five men who kidnapped and raped a woman in Marand in May 2022 were hanged today,” Mizan Online reported on Wednesday. “The defendants, who have multiple criminal records, were arrested four days after the crime,” said the same source.
In early June, Amnesty International reported that 282 people were executed in Iran in 2023, “almost double” the number of executions recorded during the same period last year.
According to several human rights NGOs, including Amnesty International, Iran executed 582 people in 2022. Iranian authorities have executed more criminals than anywhere else in the world. Only China implements more each year.
In early July, an Iranian court of justice sentenced three men to death in late 2021 for drugging and then raping a dozen women at a beauty salon. In Iran, execution is usually by hanging and may be preceded by flogging.
