5 notes from first practice shared with the Packers with the Patriots

4. There are some clues as to where the depth chart is in other positions as well.

In the battle for receiver spots past the top three (Watson, Dobbs, and Reid), there were three more receivers taking reps with Love and the No. 1 offense — Samori Toure, rookie in the fifth with Dontayvion Wicks and undrafted rookie Malik Heath.

Reid appeared to drop out in the latter part of the practice after going to the ground hard to try to catch a deep pass, and Toure replaced him in the last two-minute drill.

In contest return #3, Patrick Taylor was the only linebacker other than regulars Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon to take reps with those.

With David Bakhtiari sitting out, Rasheed Walker continued to rotate left and right tackles with the first unit in various parts of the drill. Offensive No. 1 still starts today with Zach Tom at right tackle and Josh Nijman at left tackle.

Participation-wise, inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell missed practice with an ankle injury, and was replaced on starting defense by Isaiah McDuffie. Receiver Beau Melton was also sat out with a hamstring injury.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander (groin) is back in 11-on-11 action after missing several days of team practice.

5. Anders Carlsson’s rookie volatility keeps going up and down.

Carlson had a great start to practice, making all five of his tackles with the wind ranging from 33 to 51 yards.

But at the end of the practice, against the wind, he missed a wide left from 40 yards after Love used a series of passes to Doubs and Watson in the two-minute drill to get into goal range.

Then when the kicking team tried the running scenario as the clock expired, it missed hitting a kick from 43 yards that popped and was deflected off the crossbar.
