AI Agents Gain New Ability to Control Google Home Devices Through MCP

Smart home users will soon have another way to manage connected devices, with Google opening early access to a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for its Google Home ecosystem. The technology is designed to let compatible AI agents securely interact with smart home devices, review activity and carry out commands using natural-language instructions.

The early-access rollout begins in the United States and initially targets subscribers to Google Home Premium Advanced. Google has not announced when the feature could become available in Canada or other international markets.

Google Home Opens Its Ecosystem to AI Agents

Google’s Home MCP server allows AI agents that support the Model Context Protocol to connect with devices registered through Google Home.

Compatible agents include Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT and Google Antigravity. Once authorized, an agent can interact with supported smart home equipment and access relevant event history based on permissions granted by the user.

The system is intended to make smart home management more conversational. Instead of navigating through multiple applications or menus, users could provide instructions in everyday language.

For example, an AI agent could be asked to review camera summaries, monitor recent smart home activity, operate connected devices or help create a customized dashboard showing information from across the home.

Nest, Matter and Other Connected Devices Supported

Google says the MCP integration will work with devices within the Google Home ecosystem. That includes products such as Google Nest doorbells and thermostats, along with compatible third-party hardware carrying “Works with Google Home” support.

Devices using the Matter smart home standard are also included, potentially expanding the range of equipment that AI agents can manage. Matter was developed to improve interoperability between connected-home products from different manufacturers.

For Canadian households increasingly using connected lighting, security cameras, thermostats and other smart devices, the technology could eventually provide a more centralized way to manage equipment if Google expands availability beyond the United States.

Users Will Need a Google Cloud Project

The initial setup requires more technical work than simply enabling a feature in the Google Home app.

Users must first create a Google Cloud project and configure it for Home MCP. They can then provide the MCP configuration information to their preferred compatible AI agent and instruct the agent to establish the connection.

During that process, users will be prompted to sign in to their Google account and grant the necessary permissions before the AI agent can interact with their smart home environment.

Google also plans to provide setup documentation through the Google Home Developer Center.

MCP Expands Across Google’s Services

Model Context Protocol has increasingly been adopted as a method for connecting AI assistants and agents with external applications, services and data sources.

Google already supports MCP technology in several parts of its business, including Google Cloud, data platforms, developer tools and Google Workspace.

The Google Home implementation is more directly aimed at consumers experimenting with AI agents capable of completing everyday tasks. It represents a further step toward AI assistants that can take actions across connected services rather than simply answer questions or generate information.

Early Access Limited to Premium U.S. Subscribers

Google says access to the Home MCP server will begin rolling out Wednesday, Sept. 16, and continue over the coming weeks.

For now, eligibility is restricted to U.S. customers subscribed to Google Home Premium Advanced.

The subscription costs US$20 per month and includes additional smart home features such as extended event-based video history, descriptive notifications, detailed alerts, video-history search tools and daily summaries.

Google has not provided a timetable for extending MCP access to other subscription levels or markets, leaving Canadian availability uncertain.

The company is also seeking feedback from early users through its Smart Home for Developers Community as it evaluates the technology during the initial rollout.

AI Agents Move Deeper Into Smart Home Management

The Google Home integration reflects a broader technology industry shift toward AI agents capable of interacting directly with digital services and connected hardware.

For smart home users, the potential advantage is a more flexible interface that can combine information and controls across multiple devices through conversational commands.

However, access will initially remain limited while Google gathers feedback from U.S. Premium Advanced subscribers. Whether the company expands Home MCP to Canadian users and lower-cost subscription tiers will depend on future rollout plans that have yet to be announced.
