Expanded Free Music Program Highlights City’s Growing Cultural Scene
The City of Nanaimo is set to host its most extensive Concerts in the Park series to date, offering residents and visitors a full schedule of free live music throughout the spring and summer. The expanded program reflects a broader trend across Canadian cities investing in accessible outdoor arts programming to support local talent and community engagement.
Record Lineup Across Multiple Outdoor Venues
This year’s series will feature 16 artists performing across 14 dates in parks throughout Nanaimo, making it the largest lineup in the program’s history.
Concerts will take place at several popular public spaces, including Maffeo Sutton Park, Bowen Park Amphitheatre, Westwood Lake Park, Mansfield Park and Kin Park.
According to the city, the lineup spans a wide range of musical styles, including blues, bluegrass, folk, reggae, ska, hip hop, rap, pop, country and soul—reflecting the diversity of Nanaimo’s local music community.
“With more performances than ever before, the 2026 program features 16 artists and showcases the exceptional musical talent and diversity Nanaimo is known for,” the city said in a statement.
Opening Event and New Programming Features
The series launched in April with a performance by Terry Boyle at Westwood Lake Park as part of Earth Day celebrations.
New for 2026 are three lunchtime concerts scheduled from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., offering additional flexibility for attendees, including families, students and downtown workers.
Concerts Linked to Community Events
Several performances will be tied to larger community initiatives, including Food Truck Friday, Go by Bike Week, Snuneymuxw Days and End of Summer Splash. These partnerships highlight Nanaimo’s focus on integrating arts programming with broader civic events and local traditions.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and dress appropriately for changing weather conditions typical of coastal British Columbia. The city also notes that parking may be limited at some venues and recommends walking, cycling or using public transit where possible.
