Iran5.9 magnitude earthquake kills two, injures many
An earthquake hit Iran on Saturday evening. The first report by the authorities indicated two victims and hundreds injured.
Already in July, an earthquake of magnitude 6 occurred in Iran.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck northwest Iran near its border with Turkey on Saturday evening, killing at least two people and injuring hundreds, state media reported. The earthquake struck at 9:44 pm local time (1814 GMT) in the city of Goi in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province (northwest), according to the Seismological Center of Tehran University.
“So far, 580 people have been injured and two have died in this earthquake,” the governor of West Azerbaijan province, Mohammad Sadegh Modamadian, said, as quoted by IRNA agency. “The home minister and the head of the Red Cross are visiting the temple,” he added. Iran lies at the junction of several tectonic plates and experiences strong seismic activity.
On January 18, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Goi injured several hundred people. In February 2020, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the village of Habash-e Olya (West) and crossed the border into Turkey, killing at least nine people. The worst earthquake ever recorded in Iran, a magnitude 7.4, occurred in 1990, killing 40,000 people and injuring 30,000 in the north of the country. Half a million people were then left homeless.
