‘We Believe Everyone Deserves Access to Local Food’

More locations now accept Nourish Market Dollars

Making market-fresh wares accessible to everyone is the goal behind the expansion of a local food-purchasing power initiative.

Nourish is broadening its scope by making its Nourish Market Dollars now acceptable for use at additional locations in Peterborough city and county.

Since 2013, Nourish has been working with the Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market to connect more local people to local food with the Market Dollars Program.

“Every dollar benefits our local economy and local producers whether you give them as a gift, use them yourself or donate to the program.”

Nourish Market Dollars have the same value as regular currency but can only be spent at participating markets and locations and on Nourish’s JustFood box.

Until now, the use of the Market Dollars has been limited to the Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market, but the program has now been expanded to include the new Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market and the markets in Curve Lake and Lakefield.

People can purchase the Market Dollars and they are also provided to participants in Nourish’s food skills and civic literacy programs.

“Market Dollars promote access to healthy, locally-produced food while supporting farmers throughout our region,” Nourish says.

“Every dollar benefits our local economy and local producers whether you give them as a gift, use them yourself or donate to the program.”

Donations help offset the cost of offering Market Dollars to workshop participants, sustaining both the participants and the local producers, Nourish explains.

“Market Dollars are a great tool for bringing new customers to the markets who may not have visited otherwise, and ensuring that everyone, regardless of income, has access to local food.”

During the recent Local Food Week activities, the Silver Bean Café, Black Honey Dessert and Coffeehouse, Tiny Greens and the Lakefield Pantry announced they are now accepting Market Dollars.

In addition to the Market Dollars initiative, Nourish offers programs focused on growing, cooking, eating and advocating for good food and promoting health, community, and fairness.

“We believe everyone deserves access to local food.”
