Bandwagon: Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear perform “Yellow Taxi”

Watch the latest episode of Bandwagon, the local video series featuring intimate performances from excellent bands. Today, Bandwagon comes live from Toronto’s Holy Trinity Church with Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear.

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear are a soulful folk duo from Missouri – specially, a mother-and-son folk duo, featuring Madisen and Ruth Ward, plus a touring bass player and drummer.

Madisen Ward and the Mama BearThe most obvious thing listening to the band is the easy, natural interplay between the two, both in guitar and voice – just as you’d expect. Their songs are soulful, playful, and groovy, touching on life, death, and everything in between with a maturity and a light touch.

The pair were regulars on the Kansas City coffee house circuit for years, until 2014, when a performance at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville led to acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, NPR, and Paste, which led to the band getting signed, appearing on Letterman, and releasing their debut album, 2015’s Skeleton Crew.

After seeing the pair at last year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Bandwagon folks caught up with Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, plus their band, in Toronto for a performance at Holy Trinity Church.
